Applications & Purpose:
The sole purpose of an auger attachment is for the drilling of holes.
Those holes fall into one of 4 main types:
1. For fence & deck posts, hoarding, bollards, shoring
(landscapers, fence & deck builders, contractors)
2. For foundations (pier instead of footings/walls)
(residential and commercial general contractors)
3. For bases for signs, light standards, etc
(sign companies, electricians)
4. Other applications - holes for tree planing, test holes/soil samples for engineering, etc.
(labs/analysts, nurseries/landscapers)
As can be seen from the above list, holes may be needed by anyone from landscapers to labratories and sign companies to custom home builders.
Typically the fence & deck type holes will be 9" or 12" in diameter and 4 feet in depth (below the frost line).
Specifications for any of the other types of holes may require large diameter bits, and deeper, to 6 or 8 feet. For the large depths and wider bit sizes, a hole will take a lot more time to drill, more material will be pulled out and a greater potential for obstructions becomes a reality.
Compatibility:
All bobcats with modern couplers and flush-faced hose hook-ups for the auxilliary hydraulics will run an auger. That means that almost all of our bobcats* will work - including all size categories: 3, 4, 5, and 6 foot classes.
Note, the 3-foot size will work with an auger, but it requires a smaller auger drive unit (which we do stock as well) than the 4 through 6 footers as its coupler is somewhat different; and also of note, we not recommend a larger bit than 15" go on a smaller machine - a 3 or 4-footer, nor would we recommend trying to drill deeper than 4 feet or so with those smaller sized machines.
To get deeper than 4 feet, normally an extension is required. Adding an extension or two will allow for acheiving depths of 6, 8 or even 9 or 10 feet depending on model, site conditions, etc. (To get to more than 8 feet - such as 10 or 12, we recommend going with a mini-excavator and auger, see our mini-excavator equipment section. Beyond that, you will need to call a truck-mounted drilling service.)
For our range of bit sizes, see the pricing section to the right.
*Some of our branches currently stock some makes/models that are not compatible with the augers - such as Thomas, Case or ASV models.
Availability:
As an auger is a common attachment, all our branches do stock them, and many branches carry a wide range of bit sizes too.
