Applications & Purpose:
The sole purpose of an auger attachment is for the drilling of holes.
Those holes fall into one of 4 main types:
1. For fence & deck posts, hoarding, bollards, shoring
(landscapers, fence & deck builders, contractors)
2. For foundations (pier instead of footings/walls)
(residential and commercial general contractors)
3. For bases for signs, light standards, etc
(sign companies, electricians)
4. Other applications - holes for tree planing, test holes/soil samples for engineering, etc.
(labs/analysts, nurseries/landscapers)
As can be seen from the above list, holes may be needed by anyone from landscapers to labratories and sign companies to custom home builders.
Typically the fence & deck type holes will be 9" or 12" in diameter and 4 feet in depth (below the frost line).
Specifications for any of the other types of holes may require large diameter bits, and deeper, to 6 or 8 feet. For the large depths and wider bit sizes, a hole will take a lot more time to drill, more material will be pulled out and a greater potential for obstructions becomes a reality.
Although both a skid steer loader and mini-excavator are capable of drilling most any hole, of any of the dimensions listed here, and for any of the purposes listed in the 4 main categories outlined above, the fact is that one machine type over another is preferred for given tasks. For example:
Point 1 above (fence and deck post holes), and point 4 (tree planting, soil samples, etc) are both generally best done with a skid steer (bobcat).
Whereas points 2 and 3 (pier foundations, sign bases and light standards, etc), are frequently best done with a mini-excavator, due to issues of its better reach, depth-capacity, and running larger diameter bits with greater ease.
Compatibility:
Many mini-excavators with auxilliary hudraulics (utilizing the standard flush-faced hose hook-ups) will run an auger. The key is making sure that the coupler/pin apparatus for the auger matches the type the mini-excavator uses. The best is to check with us to ensure that we have a combination of mini-ex, attachment and auger bit at your local branch that will accomodate your needs.
Many, but not all, of our branches currently stock mini-excavators with auger units, and a reasonable range of bit sizes. Certainly throughout our system we do have all possible combinations and bit sizes that can satisfy your technical specifications.
