An amateur video showing a standard mini-excavator digging with an average sized trenching bucket (16"), provides some idea of what to expect, at least roughly.  Our own videos are in production and will be posted soon when complete.

Auger (auger drive unit)
Description and Function:
An auger attachment run on a mini-excavator allows for the drilling of holes from 6" in diameter up to 36", and any depth up to 10 or 12 feet.
Price:
$ 75 per day - rental rate for the auger attachment (the drive unit itself)
$ 0 per day - rental rate for bit sizes: 6", 9", or 12" diameter (X4' long):.....
                         no charge (1 bit of those sizes is included wit auger attachment
                         rental, above, at no additonal cost. A 2nd bit in those sizes is $50 extra)
$ 50 per day - rental rate for bit sizes: 15", or 18", diameter (X4' long)
$ 100 per day - rental rate for bit sizes: 24", 30", or 36" diameter (X4' long)
$ 50 per day - rental rate for extensions (available in 2' and 4' lengths),
                          per extension
(additional to hourly charge for the basic bobcat that it needs to run it, with operator)
Applications & Purpose:
The sole purpose of an auger attachment is for the drilling of holes.
Those holes fall into one of 4 main types:
1. For fence & deck posts, hoarding, bollards, shoring
  (landscapers, fence & deck builders, contractors)
2. For foundations (pier instead of footings/walls)
  (residential and commercial general contractors)
3. For bases for signs, light standards, etc
  (sign companies, electricians)
4. Other applications - holes for tree planing, test holes/soil samples for engineering, etc.
  (labs/analysts, nurseries/landscapers)
As can be seen from the above list, holes may be needed by anyone from landscapers to labratories and sign companies to custom home builders.
Typically the fence & deck type holes will be 9" or 12" in diameter and 4 feet in depth (below the frost line).
Specifications for any of the other types of holes may require large diameter bits, and deeper, to 6 or 8 feet.  For the large depths and wider bit sizes, a hole will take a lot more time to drill, more material will be pulled out and a greater potential for obstructions becomes a reality.
Although both a skid steer loader and mini-excavator are capable of drilling most any hole, of any of the dimensions listed here, and for any of the purposes listed in the 4 main categories outlined above, the fact is that one machine type over another is preferred for given tasks.  For example:
Point 1 above (fence and deck post holes), and point 4 (tree planting, soil samples, etc) are both generally best done with a skid steer (bobcat).
Whereas points 2 and 3 (pier foundations, sign bases and light standards, etc), are frequently best done with a mini-excavator, due to issues of its better reach, depth-capacity, and running larger diameter bits with greater ease.

Compatibility:
Many mini-excavators with auxilliary hudraulics (utilizing the standard flush-faced hose hook-ups) will run an auger.  The key is making sure that the coupler/pin apparatus for the auger matches the type the mini-excavator uses.  The best is to check with us to ensure that we have a combination of mini-ex, attachment and auger bit at your local branch that will accomodate your needs.
Many, but not all, of our branches currently stock mini-excavators with auger units, and a reasonable range of bit sizes.  Certainly throughout our system we do have all possible combinations and bit sizes that can satisfy your technical specifications.
While this picture does seem silly, it does well demonstrate an example of how much more flexible a mini-excavator can be sometimes, when running an attachment such as an auger, over a skid steer.  Often the reach (outward, as in this case), and downward (into a hole) or out and over - such as onto a terrace, is imperative to the job's getting done.

Stocking bits in all sizes (diameter in inches):
6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, 36

Flexibility is a benefit of an auger driven by an mini-ex, also reach, depth, size of bit that can be used, increased speed
