Bobcat Service
Machine-with-Operator Service
Description and Function:
In most cases the thumb is not actually an attachment technically, in the typical sense, where the unit can be taken on or off – normally it is a permanent fixture on the mini-excavator. It is attachment-like in so far as it is an upgrade feature that makes the machine so much more useful and productive. Therefore, we price out our mini-excavators that come with this permanently-installed attachment as if it were an attachment, we call it an "upgrade feature", and charge a daily rental rate on it, like we do with our attachments. It is available only on some models.
Great for demolition, picking up odd shapes – materials too big and awkward to normally fit in the bucket; ripping up roots, and so on.
Price:
$ 75 per day - rental rate
(additional to hourly charge for the basic bobcat that it needs to run it, with operator)
Comment on Pricing:
The minimal cost on a rental basis, as noted above, to upgrade to a model with a thumb, is insignificant compared to your cost savings to be achieved by the speed and ease of use by having it. If your project involves moving broken concrete or block, or other awkard and irregular-shaped materials, and those too large for the bucket, or tearing down and demolition work, you will find the operator is able to increase his speed dramatically if his machine comes with a hydraulic clamp or thumb.
Applications & Purpose:
A thumb-equipped mini-excavator is useful to nearly anyone, any contractor regardless of their particular sub-industry. Frequently custom home builders benefit by it due to the need to tear down old existing structures to make room for the new house, including the breaking up of old footings and foundations and pulling block and such materials out of the trench and loading them up into the truck for haulage away.
Tree services, landscapers or others clearing land for development or removal of old overgrown landscaping benefit by the thumb for pulling out roots, stumps and loading logs.
Really, the benefits and usages of a thumb are nearly unlimited.
Compatibility:
A thumb is generally not subject to questions of compatibiity, as the hydraulic clamp/thumb is either already installed on the mini-excavator or it isn't.
Availability:
We stock mini-excavators with this thumb feature in nearly all of our size-classes, and a number of our branches, however in very limited numbers. Please inquire well in advance if you need this feature so we can arrange it for you in a timely manner.

Play the video below to see it in action:
This is an amateur 1-minute video of a thumb on a mini-excavator in action. It is not our video and we are working at producing videos of our own, coming shortly. At the least, this shows roughly how the thumb works, although it is obvious that the operator is not very experienced with it.
