With the boom retracted, the 331E can work and swing in tight work spaces, like between these houses
Alternative - order a non-extenda-boom Maximum mini-excavator
This model will handle almost all attachments available for machines of this class (and of which we stock most all), with the exception of the thumb/clamp (which is incompatible):
Bobcat 331E - maximum reach, minimum space
Full-sized machine - Plus
This particular model comes with the rare feature of an extendable boom or dipper - a feature allowing it to dig to a depth of a remarkable 13-feet - and that on only a 5’ wide machine! Big enough to handle most excavating tasks efficiently on commercial jobsites, but at only 5 feet wide, it's compact enough to be useful on many residential sites.
Perfect for pools, additions, and trenching for waterlines, water/sewer hook-ups, etc. Anytime you need big-machine capacity in a smaller-machine size. Maximum among mini-excavators, but still very compact.
Will carry most all available attachments.
Bobcat 331E
The "E" extended-reach, 331E model shown. Must be this specific model for this feature, using its long reach to clean out a pond.
* Please note that among mini- and compact- excavators, this feature is a rarilty - that of having a hydraulically-extendable boom (or dipper/stick).
Almost all other makes/models offer only a fixed boom, meaning whatever the stated maximum dig depth is the actual maximum that it can reach. In a machine of this size (5-feet wide, 4-ton class) that means a maximum dig depth of 9 1/2 to 10 feet, typically. It also means that for those other machines, reaching a depth of dig beyond 10 feet, as in the case of this machine at almost 13 feet (12' 10" technically), one would need a much heavier, larger, bulkier machine to achieve that kind of dig-depth capability and reach. The problem with that is not just cost, but oftentimes more importantly, space. The bigger machines will usually be 6, or sometimes 7 feet wide, requiring 7 or 8 feet of access just to get into the dig area. And because of the bigger fixed booms and stick/dipper components, the machine sits taller, and swings wider, making it difficult, slow, or even impossible to work in the frequently-cramped work areas that are common when a mini-excavator is called for (that limited space is quite often precisely the reason a mini-excavator is needed).
This model, the Bobcat 331E specifically (the E refers to Extendible-boom), is one of only a few models ever made in this way, and even it is no longer produced by Bobcat. We happen to have a number of them in our fleet at some of our various locations for your use (order well in advance if you need one, as they are in limited supply and high demand). They are not available in our rentals-division, but only in Bobcat Services, with operator.
Besides being able to reach deeper, and yet have a relatively small footprint, and when retracted, a short boom swing requirement (this in turn making the unit an easy fit into tight access and limited working-space sites), but the extenda-boom also is useful due to its long reach (see picture above of the 331E reaching far into a pond to clean it out of weeds, or lowering the bottom), and it can load most dump trucks directly.
But when extra reach or depth is needed, the operator at a flip of a switch can extend the boom another 3 feet

Shown here an video demonstrating basic functions of a maximum-class of mini-excavator. Shown: a Bobcat 331. Please note: it is NOT an extended-boom model (the 331"E"), we couldn't find a decent one online. It's a brief video clip which provides a glimpse of what the basic machine looks like in motion. Our own videos are in production and will be posted soon when complete - in particular the extendible-boom models. See an example of the extendible-arm in the video to the right.
Play the video below to see the manufacturer's promo of the extendable-arm feature:
Our thanks to the Bobcat Company, manufacturer of the mini-excavators shown, for the use of this video. Here they are demonstrating the extendible-arm feature available on a select few of their models. Here they highlight the E55, a new model. We stock a number of 331E's in our fleet which also have the extendible-boom feature - exactly as shown here except the 331E's do not have thumbs/clamps as shown in the video. Our own videos are in production and will be posted soon when complete - in particular the extendible-boom models, especially the 3331E (a 331 non-extendible version shown in video to the left).
